Find your Purpose
Do you have a special talent? Standing on one leg? Are you the World Champion Space-Hopper? Or more seriously, are you a good listener or planner? Can you explain technical jargon or scientific research so that others understand? Maybe you’re good with your hands and can craft wood-art or jewellery or fix electronics? If you can select just one thing, one special talent that you’re good at, what would it be? Or is there something that you wish you were doing, that you’ve always wanted to try but haven’t gotten around to yet?
Take a moment to write a list of:
Done that? Good! Next… list them in order of enjoyment – which one is your favorite?
Now... write down the first ideas that come to you (don't judge them, just write!) in answer to this question:
- all the activities and hobbies you enjoy doing
- your skills that elicit a sense of joy and achievement when you use them

Now... write down the first ideas that come to you (don't judge them, just write!) in answer to this question:
- How can I make this activity into something that can be of service to others?

Maybe you are really good at math, and you could consider tutoring a neighbor’s kid. Or you love ice skating, and could offer lessons to beginners. Maybe you are an attentive listener and think outside-the-box and could put that talent towards a mentoring role.
The key to finding your purpose through your talent is to have fun and use it in service to others.
The reason you may enjoy certain activities, or be skilled at a certain thing might just be your Soul reaching out to connect to you. If you keep receiving repetitive thoughts to try something new, this is your Soul connecting to you. So now is the time to pay attention, especially if you’re feeling lost, purposeless and needing something meaningful in your life. It could be that your special, unique talent is your gift, and your gift to give to others. It may just be your Soul purpose. There’s an awesome saying by an unknown author:
“The meaning of life is to find your GIFT. The purpose of life is to give it away”.
Isn’t that awesome? It sums it up really. We are all unique, we all came here with a purpose, and it is up to you to find out what that purpose is. Are you good at acting? Teaching? Cooking? Maybe in all seriousness, your ability to stand on one leg – that balance - means you’d be good at yoga – and you can record yourself demonstrating poses and post videos online to help others. |
How do you know if it is your Soul purpose?
Well, does it make you feel happy? Does it make you feel loving, warm, fuzzy feelings? Does it make you feel useful? Does it give meaning to your life? Does it give you a sense of achievement? Does it just feel, right? Do you feel excited and calm at the same time when you think about or carry out your special talent? Do you want to share it with others?

If you answer yes to all or most of these, then chances are you have found your purpose, through your special talent – and this is your connection with your Soul.
If you haven’t figured out what your special talent is yet, that is okay. And I know some of you will be saying “I don’t have a special talent”. Well I want you to stop beating yourself up and talking in negatives. It’s not that you don’t have one, it’s just that you haven’t discovered it yet. Everyone has something to offer this world, including, and especially, you!
So take the pressure off yourself in the meantime, if you’re unsure. Give yourself the permission and time to play, to enjoy, and to create! If you’ve always wanted to draw or paint – start! If you’ve always wanted to learn a new language – start! If you’ve always wanted to coach basketball – start! It takes a lil’ bit of courage and a splash of motivation, but right now one step is all you need to take.

What you’ll find is that as you utilize your talent, you will increase your enjoyment for it. Your feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters (endorphins, serotonin, dopamine etc) will rise and this will make you feel revitalized, happy, and motivated. Spend time with these wonderful emotions, relish them, and let them happen. Let them flow into your talent, and as you do others will notice how happy it makes you, and that will make them happy too. This is where your talent starts becoming of service to others, and this is the first step in fulfilling your purpose.
Enjoy discovering what your special talent is, and in the back of your mind, think about how you can use this to be of service to others, and start slow. But whatever you do, believe in yourself, and take that action today. Start today. Do something you enjoy. Right now. Connect with your soul through your special talent. You came to this earth to share your uniqueness with the world, so what are you waiting for? Just do it!
